Tourism in Helsingborg is increasing
The tourism is very important for the city of Helsingborg. The turnover of the Tourist industry is hundreds of millions every year, and it is a great promotion for the city both in Sweden and the rest of the world. In 2015, tourism turnover in Helsingborg increased by 7 percent compared to the year before. Simultaneously, a new record was made – with more than 700 000 overnight stays in the city. It gives Helsingborg the seventh place among the country’s 290 municipalities when it comes to tourism.
The tourism stands for 3.4 percent of the total production in Helsingborg. In 2015, many were recruited in the tourism sector and the number of employees increased by 180 employees. In total, nearly 3 500 full-time employees are employed in the tourism industry in Helsingborg. Also, the total number of guest nights is on the rise. Between 2014 and 2015, guest nights increased by 76 000, or 12 percent.
Successful events promoting tourism
Helsingborg Horse Week and the music contest The Second Chance (a part of the Swedish song contest called Melodifestivalen) were two of the main attractions to draw more tourists to Helsingborg during 2015. In the same year, the bike trail Kattegattleden opened after many years of building it.
More than 80 percent of the visitors of Helsingborg come from Sweden, mainly from the southern and western parts of the country. In the countries outside of Sweden, most tourists come from Germany, the UK and Denmark. The typical tourist is slightly older, comes to town to see friends and family and stay an average of 3.3 nights.
